The Milford Museum American History Series continues with a program about the Tuskegee Airmen presented by Andrew Swygert on Saturday, February 8, 2025, 1:00 p.m. at the Milford Public Library in Milford, Delaware.
Through extensive publicity in recent years, many Americans have a passing familiarity with the Tuskegee Airmen and their overall achievements during World War II. However, the individuals who contributed so much to the record of success of the Tuskegee Airmen in defending our nation are much less known. This program will present the history of the Tuskegee Airmen through stories of the pioneering black aviators, determined politicians, far-sighted educators, professional military personnel, and others involved in the effort to show that African Americans could fly and fight as well as anyone. The stories of selected Tuskegee Airmen will also be presented to recognize individuals particularly associated with the unit’s success during the war and afterwards, and who individually and collectively helped to effect changes in the military and civilian society that reached far beyond their wartime service.
Andre Swygert is a Wilmington resident and retired business development professional who enjoyed a successful career principally in the aerospace and defense sectors. Swygert continues to indulge his life-long passion for aviation by embarking on a second career as an author of non-fiction material on technology, events, and people in the industry, after developing works on a part-time basis for Air & Space Smithsonian magazine and other outlets. He has maintained an interest in the history of the Tuskegee Airmen since his early teenage years, which has led him to be a long-standing member and historian in the John H. Porter – First State Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. This Dover-based group is one of over 30 chapters constituting a national organization dedicated to perpetuating the history of the men and women who served in and supported the separate black Army Air Force units before, during, and after World War II.
Sponsored by the Milford Museum, these monthly programs focus on a variety of topics concerning local, state, and national history. These presentations are held on the second Saturday of each month, at 1:00 p.m., in the Milford Public Library. The library is located at 11 S.E. Front Street in Milford, Delaware. For more information, please contact the Museum at (302) 424-1080, [email protected]. These programs are offered through a generous grant from The Delaware Heritage Commission.
