Fifer’s Fall Festival

Visiting Fifer’s during their Fall Festival feels like walking into a season’s worth of options at once. The festival kicks off in September and runs through November, with these and many more activities headlining the event:

• Corn maze: The corn maze features a brand-new, themed design every year, giving even returning visitors something fresh to wander through before dark.
• U-pick apples: Apples are available Monday through Saturday during the day, while supplies last, so arriving early gives you the best shot at the ripest picks. 
• U-pick pumpkins: Pumpkins join the U-pick lineup in October, though availability depends on weather and crop yield each year.
• Mega slides: Enjoy multiple mega slides that form part of the upgraded U-Play activity area.
• Corn crib: The U-Play area features a popular, kid-friendly corn crib, filled with corn kernels or cobs for kids to play in.
• Grain cart sports: The whole family can enjoy grain cart sports, featuring popular games like harvest hoops or funnel ball, built into huge grain carts.
• Family Photo Opportunities: Pose for family photos with Fifer’s fall pumpkin and Fall themed displays.
• Face Paintings: The kids and whole family can enjoy Fall themed face paintings on Saturdays. 
• Live Music: Every Saturday enjoy live music while partaking in the festivities and events. 
• Farm Animals: Come on Saturdays to enjoy farm animals such as alpacas! 

Fifer’s also has a number of active activities during Fall Fest that are great for the whole family including pedal tractors, jumping pillows, mega slides, zip swings, jumping pads a super slide, funnel ball, farm volleyball, conk the crow, tire tumblers, harvest hoops, wall ball, soccer, roller blowers, octoball and apple cannons. This is truly a fall festival fit for the whole family and anyone can find at least one of 28 events and activities to enjoy! There is also fresh food and sweet treats and drinks available to help fuel your day and competitive edge. 

The farm is typically open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays. U-pick availability can shift day to day, so it’s worth a quick check before heading out. Refuel at Fifer’s Farm Store & Kitchen, where you can enjoy freshly picked fruits, apple cider donuts and a large variety of seasonal treats perfect for the fall. Wagons filled with pre-picked pumpkins are also available at the Farm Store, ready for you to select the perfect one to take home.

Oktoberfest at Rail Haus

Dover throws two full days of Oktoberfest at Rail Haus at 92 North West Street. During the day, you can enjoy classic games like steinholding and pretzel-eating contests, plus festbiers and German fare, including giant pretzels and bratwurst. On some nights, Polkadelphia takes the stage, bringing all the polka energy. DJs and musicians keep the energy going all night long, so you can dance the evening away. Lederhosen and dirndls are welcome, though not required, so come as you are or dress for the occasion.

The Street Vendor Market in the afternoon, featuring local businesses and artists, creates a warm neighborhood feel. Live music by the Doppelgänger band and others, along with plenty of Oktoberfest beer and food, rounds out the celebratory weekend. Children have lots of room to roam outdoors, and a kid-friendly menu keeps everyone happy and full. Rail Haus is veteran- and minority-owned, and it shows in the welcoming and diverse nature of this event. 

Blackbird Creek Fall Festival

The Blackbird Creek Fall Festival is held annually, typically on a Saturday in October. The day packs in lots of fun for the whole family, such as:

• Tractor-pulled hayrides: Wagons wind through the fields and woods of the reserve in Townsend, Delaware, giving visitors a scenic tour of the property.
• Local artisan vendors: Makers and crafters set up throughout the grounds, offering handmade goods worth browsing between activities.
• Kids’ crafts and face painting: Children can create fall-themed crafts and get their faces painted throughout the afternoon.
• Live music in the pavilion: Local musicians provide an exciting soundtrack for the whole event.

There’s plenty of open space for kids to run around between activities and no shortage of ways to spend the afternoon without feeling rushed. The Delaware National Estuarine Research Reserve hosts the event and celebrates the plants, wildlife and traditions that make the Delaware Bayshore worth protecting.

Wagon Rides at Killens Pond Campground

Killens Pond State Park offers public wagon rides that wind through miles of gorgeous fields and forest, past a quiet pond and stretches of woods that come to life in October. Rides run weather permitting, and preregistration is required. Online registration closes 22 hours before each ride, so call ahead if you are booking closer to the day. One thing for families to keep in mind is that the benches don’t have hay for cushioning, so bringing a blanket makes for a warmer, comfier trip. 

Killens Pond Campground is open year-round and also hosts autumnal activities throughout the fall, but these events are reserved exclusively for registered campground guests. If you are in the mood for a full Halloween-season experience, booking a stay at the campground is the way to go.
